After storming back to power, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Maharashtra on Saturday authorised party chief Sonia Gandhi to choose its new leader who will be the chief minister, senior party leader A K Antony said.

“We have conveyed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi about the one-line resolution authorising her to elect a new leader of CLP”, he told mediapersons.
Antony said "we sought the views of MLAs individually and majority of of them have said they would leave the decision to party high command and some expressed their preferences (on the new CLP leader)". Meanwhile, Ashok Chavan is the frontrunner for the top post. Industries Minister Narayan Rane and Union Minister Gurudas Kamat are also hopefuls for the CM’s post.
Former CMs and Union Ministers — Vilasrao Deshmukh and Sushil Kumar Shinde have ruled themselves out of the chief ministerial race.
